Know what can affect your licence

There are over 204 traffic offences currently active in Mauritius. Only a smaller group of offences, described below, can result in disqualification and driving licence suspension or cancellation.

Minor traffic offences are usually accompanied by smaller fines, while serious offences can carry substantially higher penalties. This page explains the offences and sanctions covered by the source material and directs you to the detailed pages where appropriate.

Offences leading to suspension or cancellation

Examples include:

  • Driving a vehicle without ever having been issued a driving licence — fine Rs 100,000.
  • Permitting or employing an unlicensed person to drive a motor vehicle — fine Rs 50,000.
  • Fraudulent application for a driving licence — fine Rs 10,000.
  • Driving without the minimum mandatory third-party insurance cover — fine Rs 10,000.
  • Causing death by dangerous/careless driving or under the influence of drinks or drugs — see the Drink Drive page.
  • Involuntary homicide — the court may allow part disqualification; fine Rs 10,000.
  • Alcohol concentration above prescribed limits — court may allow part disqualification; minimum fine Rs 20,000.
  • Driving while disqualified, — fine Rs 10,000.
