Road Safety Moris is an initiative created and maintained by a dedicated team of road safety instructors. Our mission is to actively promote awareness and share knowledge about driving licences, traffic regulations, and the penalties prescribed under the Road Traffic Act of the Republic of Mauritius.
Over the past few decades, Mauritius has witnessed significant growth in its vehicle fleet. Registered vehicles soared from roughly 188,000 in 1997 to over 559,000 by the end of 2023, representing an increase of nearly 200%. More recent data shows that between 2014 and 2025, vehicle numbers climbed from 465,000 to around 733,000, a 58% rise in just over a decade.
As of early 2025, there were 337,585 registered cars, supported by 127,590 dual-purpose vehicles and 124,384 motorcycles contributing to the total fleet. This expanding number of vehicles now navigates a road network spanning approximately 2,772 km, composed of main, secondary, motorway, and other types of roads, the vast majority of which are paved. With this rapid growth—combined with outdated and often inadequate driver training and testing standards—it is no surprise that the country continues to face a worrying rise in serious and fatal road accidents.
The objectives of this website are to:
Educate drivers on the legal consequences of their actions on the road and outline what happens when they are caught violating the law.
Provide up-to-date information to drivers who have committed one or more offences, including the procedures and penalties they can expect.
Offer critical guidance to learner drivers of motorcycles, lorries, buses, and private cars—information that is often difficult for the general public to access.
