Practical Driving Test Structure

What does the practical test cover?

The supplied Tenth Schedule describes Part I — Practical Off-Road Driving Manoeuvres and sets out three tests: Test 1 for driving manoeuvres in the manoeuvring area, Test 2 for eyesight, and Test 3 for vehicle safety checks.

Test 1 — Driving manoeuvres test

Practical off-road manoeuvres in the manoeuvring area.

What the applicant is required to do

Every applicant shall perform, unaided, the following manoeuvres under full control, without stopping and whilst keeping both feet on the foot-pegs or foot-controls:

1. Slalom A slalom between a line of cones.
2. One-point turn A one-point turn through 180° in an area having a width of 6 metres.

Track requirements and control abilities tested

The applicant shall be required to drive on a bituminous concrete track of a length and width of at least 100 metres and 6 metres, respectively, to test the ability to:

(a) Low / moderate speed control

Control the motorcycle manoeuvres automatically at a low or moderate speed.

(b) Smooth movement

Make the motorcycle move, accelerate and stop smoothly and without stalling the engine.

(c) Precision & coordination

Operate the pedals with precision and coordination, especially by combined clutch or accelerator and clutch or brake.

(d) Obstacle avoidance

Avoid an obstacle at a moderate speed of 45 km/h for A1, 50 km/h for A2 & A.  

(e) Emergency braking

Make an emergency braking at a speed of at least 45 km/h for A1, 50 km/h for A2 & A.

Test 2 — Eyesight test requirements

The eyesight requirement specified by the supplied schedule.

Read the registration mark

Every applicant shall be required to read, in daylight, a motor vehicle registration mark on a number plate, containing letters and figures of a height of 75 millimetres at a distance of 27.5 metres, with the help of spectacles or contact lenses, if so required.

Number plate position

The number plate shall be that of a stationary vehicle which shall be in such a position as to be properly viewed.

Recording of results

The results of the test shall be recorded in the form set out in the Eleventh Schedule.

Test 3 — Vehicle safety check test

Ten questions are selected from the listed safety checks.

Every applicant shall be asked questions of any 10 of the following vehicle safety checks, as applicable:

Indicators Show how to check that the direction indicators are working.

Brake lights Show how to check that the brake lights are working.

Horn Show how to check that the horn is working (off-road only).

Rear fog light Show how to switch on the rear fog light(s) and explain when it shall be used.

Headlights Show how to switch the headlight from dipped to main beam and explain how to know whether the main beam is on whilst inside the vehicle.

Oil Identify where and show how to check if the engine has sufficient oil.

Coolant Show how to check the correct engine coolant level.

Brake fluid Identify and show where the brake fluid reservoir is located and check the safe level of hydraulic brake fluid.

Brakes Explain how to check that the brakes are working before starting a journey.

Tyre pressure Explain where to find the information for the recommended tyre pressures for the vehicle and how to check tyre pressures.

Tyres Explain how to check the tyres to ensure that they have sufficient tread depth and that their general condition is safe to use on the road.

Lights Explain how to check that the headlights and tail lights are working.

Brakes — anti-lock braking system Explain how to detect if there is a problem with the anti-lock braking system.

Chassis parts of an auto cycle or motorcycle Explain how to detect if there is a problem with the exhaust, frame and suspension.

Other control parts of an auto cycle or motorcycle Explain how to check that the throttle, clutch lever, hoses and cables.

Maximum of 4 faults

Every incorrect answer that an applicant provides shall constitute a fault. An applicant shall be allowed up to a maximum of 4 faults.
