Bus Driver Training and Test in Mauritius Quiz

The bus driving licence in Mauritius has substantially changed over the years. More stringent laws and regulations have been enacted with the primary concern of public safety in mind of the legislators. Today, a bus driving licence is available in three categories (please see Category of Buses below).

It is important to note that private car licence has been made inoperative to drive any type of vehicle exceeding 7 seats in Mauritius. For example, a 14-seat van cannot be registered as "private car" vehicle nowadays. Below are listed the laws, regulations and guide pertaining to driving licence for buses within the Republic of Mauritius.

Oral Test Mechanic in Creole Language

A candidate needs to score 20 good answers on 25 questions to pass in the oral mechanic test for goods vehicles and bus. Below is a good sample of what to expect on the exam:

In Mauritius you could be fined if your bus:

1. Is not covered by a valid Insurance, Fitness Certificate and the Motor Vehicle Licence (Declaration).

2. Bus Permit (Condition) delivered by NTA is expired or you are not carrying it.

3. Does not have an emergency Red Flag.

4. Fire extinguisher missing or expired.

5. Hazards Triangle indicator damaged or missing.

6. Oil Leaks.

7. Fuel Leaks. Worn Tyres.

8. Missing spare tyre, wheel brace and jack.

9. Rear Axle differential is not painted white. (only for lorries now)

10. Rocks are left trapped in between the double rear wheels.

11. Over speed (See Bus Speed Limits).

12. Take more passengers than authorised.

13. Embark passenger other than at designated areas ('Bus Stop').

14. Driver not wearing NTA badge.

15. Route display panel showing wrong destination and wrong tariffs applied.

16. Smoke whilst driving.

17. Faulty door or door left open whilst bus in running.

18. Lights are faulty or burnt. Faulty horn.

19. Engine must not be left running (idle) without driver behind the wheels.

20. Broken rear view mirrors or cracked windshield.

21. Seats broken or torn.

22. No litter box available.

23. Faulty or broken destination panel display.

24. Bus anti slip floor worn or not tidy.

25. Dirty bus body.

26. Driving in neutral.

Basic checks before bus leaves depot:

1. Insurance, Road Worthy Certificate and NTA's Motor Vehicle Licence are in conformity with the Road Traffic Act.

2. Good condition fire extinguisher.

3. Radiator is properly filled.

4. Emergency Red Flag is available.

5. Proper oil level in engine.

6. Sufficient fuel level.

7. Brake fluid at safe level.

8. Lights (flasher, stop light, lentenne) are working.

9. Windscreen washer working.

10. Horn working.

11. Jack, spare tyre and wheel brace are in good condition.

12. Seats are in good condition and clean.

13. Destination display properly showing.

14. Registration number plate clearly visible.

Speed limit for Bus:

A Bus whether it is a micro, mini or omni bus, is a public service vehicle (PSV), and as such the following speed limits apply:

1. 80 Km/h on Motorways.

2. 60 Km/h on Main & Secondary Roads.

3. 60 Km/h in Urban or Rural roads.

Category of Buses & Additional Information

Bus Categories:

1. Microbus: can carry 16 passengers including the driver

2. Minibus: carry a minimum of 16 but no more than 32 passengers including the driver

3. Omnibus: carry above 32 passengers

Typical Tire Pressure:

1. 1000 x 20 = 90 lbs

2. 900 x 20 = 80 lbs

3. 825 x 20 = 70 lbs

Public line Bus General Conditions:

1. The NTA's bus license must be clearly visible and shown to authorities upon request.

2. Bus must be in good condition and tidy.

3. The wheel brace and jack must be in good condition.

4. The fire extinguisher must be in good condition and within the driver's reach.

5. Passenger's capacity must be observed.

6. No goods or materials are to be carried in a bus.

7. Driver must wear uniform and badge.

8. Smoking is prohibited for the driver while carrying passengers.

9. A bin must be provided inside the bus: dimension = 6" X 10".

10. A notice to give priority to older or disabled persons must be clearly visible.

11. Bus must follow NTA's allocated route.

Contract or special route bus:

1. Before setting on its route, the bus owner must fill its notebook with trip details in triplicate.

2. Bus owner must have a garage and an office with phone number.

3. A first aid box is mandatory.

4. License delivered by the NTA must be adhered to.
